Below is the archived information and news since inception. 2006January 2006After a well earned rest, the committee is back into full swing for the new year and is already working hard on the issues for this year. The big news for the start of the year is that the committee has finalised discussions with OAMPS insurance and the ABEA has been approved for accreditation with OAMPS Natural Therapists Scheme and further, all EAV / Energy Medicine modalities covered by the ABEA have been approved. We feel this is one further small step towards having our industry more professionally recognised! Now, all ABEA members will be eligible for OAMPS insurance coverage which is a combined Professional Malpractice, Product Liability and Public Liabilty Insurance at very reasonable rates. For further information please contact the ABEA on admin@bioenergetics.org.au or look for further updates to come soon on the ABEA join page. 2005November 2005At last we reached a major milestone and held our first AGM on Sunday 6th November, 2005. It was a well attended meeting, with a change of office bearers reflected in a new President, Sean Tume, and three new committee members, Fiona Stephens, Darran Sassall and Patrick Braz coming on board. Big welcome to them ! Many thanks to Dr Chris Tsoutis for making his rooms available as a venue for the meeting. Our 2nd Newsletter coming out later this week will cover the meeting in more depth. June to September 2005Over the last few months, the ABEA committee has continued to work hard towards achieving some of the major goals that we set for ourselves. Namely these include: Securing a relationship with an appropriate insurance company for valid and professional insurance for Bio-Energetic and Energy Medicine Practitioners, and becoming a member of the Federation of Natural and Traditional Therapists and applying for a recommendation by the FNTT for inclusion on the Schedule 1 list of Associations within the Therapeutic Goods Regulations for those ABEA members that utilize ingestive modalities and require a TGA exemption certificate to purchase "Practitioner Only" products. Many, many hours work have gone into preparing applications and information dossiers for these matters. We are close to finalizing these issues and will have more information for you all in the near future. The ABEA committee is also finishing off the final preparations in readiness for the AGM on Sunday November 6th. Venue details are yet to be finalized however these will be posted within at least two weeks prior to the AGM. We would encourage all members to attend our first AGM as a show of support, for the immense amount of work that has been completed, to date, for the benefit of the entire industry. All committee positions will be thrown open for re-election, and we continue to look for enthusiastic and passionate people to help grow the Association. We still have much work left to do, and it's an exciting time to be involved in playing a part in shaping the future direction of Energy Medicine in Australia. Our first ABEA newsletter is also due out very soon and after some months in planning, we feel we've developed a viable format that will keep members up to date on all matters relevant to the industry and the ABEA generally. The committee would appreciate members emailing in articles or discussion topics that they would like to see in the newsletter so that we can continue to improve on it with every issue. Finally, the committee has agreed upon utilizing a Yahoo based discussion group for the benefit of members and non members with an interest in Bio-Energetic and Energy Medicine. This group is moderated by the committee so as to make sure that professionalism and ethical standards are met within the forum, however, we hope that this may in some small way help to unite a wide range of practitioners by discussing topics such as: theory and philosophy, current research, current protocols and other such areas. The work still continues but the committee feels that we are closing in on some of the major targets we have set for ourselves. We would dearly like to see continued input from members as to the direction they would like to see the ABEA go as the committee is working for you: the practitioners, and the industry as a whole. May 2005The ABEA steering committee has continued to work diligently toward finalizing Association infrastructure, developing course outlines, and liaising with a number of potential colleges to deliver training. There have been challenges to develop a course that meets required competencies according to the 2002 Health Training package, as well as allowing for existing practitioner experience. We appreciate that some practitioners may be feeling a little threatened by all the proposed changes, however we would really like to reassure you that the intention is to include everyone, and this may require a window period of "grandfathering" i.e.. a recognition of prior learning and clinical experience. Hence some of the initial concerns that have been expressed about having to 'go back to school' are not valid. The desire of the Association is to bring a solid background knowledge of Energy Medicine principles to all practitioners, as many of us have entered the modality from a more traditional complementary perspective. There are certain fundamentals that we believe need to be far more expanded and taught, and to this end we have created a draft set of Competencies that fall within the parameters of the Health Training package. The goal is to bring new and existing practitioners online with standards that will be accepted by the Federation of Natural and Traditional Therapists (FNTT). If accepted, it means our members will be able to to receive a TGA Certificate of Exemption for practitioner only products. Trans Tasman issues continue to dominate the airwaves with the most recent Press Release on the 10th May 2005 listing the Joint Interim Expert Advisory Committee on Standards ( WOW what a mouthful !). An interesting but moot point is that there appears to be very little representation for Complementary Health amongst the 23 appointees. We have also become aware that there is a listing on the Legislation Proposed for Introduction in the 2005 Winter sittings, of Parliament, for changes to the Therapeutic Goods Act in relation to compliance by industry. It is known as the Therapeutic Goods Amendment Bill 2005. We believe it relates to increased penalties and liabilities in relation to regulatory requirements on safety, efficacy and the quality of therapeutic goods. Whilst in theory this document is a proposed response to improve manufacturing standards across the board, post Pan, we feel it is also important to remain vigilant to the proposed recommendations of the Expert Committee, which was released finally on the 9th March 2005. If fully implemented, as is being suggested in some circles, then expect life to get interesting ! Click here to read this document which is available on the TGA site. Be warned though, it's a large document to download ! We highly recommend that all health practitioners should make the time to read this important document. On a lighter note, AGM time is rapidly approaching, and all positions will be thrown open for nomination. A date will be posted shortly, and the meeting will be held in Sydney. Proxy forms will be sent to all members, however you may only vote if you are a financial member. Now might be the time to make the decision to JOIN ! If the Association is to grow and prosper we need committed, actively participating members to come on board. We encourage YOU to be part of this exciting time of developing our future direction. January 2005Many challenging developments have been taking place in our industry. There have been significant changes afoot within the TGA regarding regulation of advertising content and listing of devices. 2004As of the 4th October 2004, manufacturers and distributors of devices generally, were unable to advertise or sell their machines if they had not secured a current inclusion on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG). Many companies were either unaware of the impending changes, and this resulted in a flurry of administrative red tape to meet the deadline. Some simply ran out of time, some remain unlisted and some are pending. If you are purchasing a device we highly encourage you to ask for a current ARTG listing number, in writing from the supplier. Click here to search the ARTG for your device. From the point of view of practitioners, the most urgent issue for us, was the question of whether we would continue to be allowed to operate our existing devices. Click here to read the response from Mike Flood, of the Blood, Tissue & Devices section of the TGA, which the ABEA secured in July 2004. There has been some considerable research and lobbying already conducted to assist with clarification of the issues in relation to software updates paid in advance for, through service agreements. It would appear that so long as they do not radically alter the intended purpose of the function of the device, there will not be a problem. Service agreements can be honored as well as repairs. Click here to read the TGA response regarding the sale of 2nd hand devices. The ABEA will continue to pursue this matter, as we believe it's imperative to retain the right to keep our machines serviced, repaired and updated. This should not constitute a 'new purchase' status. We would STRONGLY recommend you visit the following sites: http://www.tga.gov.au/devices/devices.htm for a full overview of the TGA site on Medical devices www.tgacc.com.au web sites to familiarize yourself with the upcoming advertising issues. Keep up to date with the latest developments in Bio-Energetic Medicine regulatory issues by checking the TGA link on this site. We will also keep you informed with our progress on the TGA issues with regular updates by email.
